The Ghan
The Ghan follows in the footsteps of the early explorers and is named after the Afghan cameleers who provided the only link between Australia's Red Centre and the rest of the world in the late 1800's. The 47 hour, 2,979 km journey between Adelaide and Darwin is one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. The legendary journey through the heart of Australia begins in the rolling hills surrounding Adelaide and crosses the rugged Red Centre to reach the spectacular tropical scenery of the Top End. Whistle stop tours are available during scheduled stops at Alice Springs and Katherine. Connections with The Ghan are available from Sydney on the Indian Pacific and from Melbourne on The Overland.
Indian Pacific
As the name implies, the Indian Pacific spans the vast continent of Australia coast to coast from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. The 65 hour, 4,352 km journey between Sydney and Perth is one of the world's longest train journeys and includes 478 km along the longest straight stretch of track in the world. From the spectacular Blue Mountains to the treeless plains of The Nullarbor, with 3 nights aboard the train in either direction a variety of unique landscapes unfold and there is a fascinating array of wildlife. Whistle stop tours are available during scheduled stops at Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook and Kalgoorlie. Connections with the Indian Pacific are available from Melbourne on The Overland.
The Overlander
The Overland commenced service in 1887, pioneering inter-capital rail travel between Melbourne and Adelaide. The name was derived from the affectionate term 'Overlander', an adventurer who had travelled across the country. Today, this historic train continues to provide a comfortable and convenient way to travel between the 2 cosmopolitan cities and, with a daylight service between Melbourne and Adelaide, it is possible to view the beautiful country scenery en-route.
